Beyond the City: Top 5 Day Trips for a Perfect Seattle Fall Adventure

While Seattle itself has some beautiful urban spaces for enjoying the autumn colors, sometimes you just need to get out of the city and fully immerse yourself in nature’s most spectacular season. From golden forests to fiery canyons, the Pacific Northwest puts on a show that’s a feast for the eyes and a treat for the soul.

For our guests at Book It Vacation Rentals, we’ve put together our top 5 day trips from Seattle that are perfect for a fall adventure. Pack some layers, grab a thermos of hot cocoa, and hit the road!

1. The North Cascades: The Larch March

This is for the serious leaf-peepers and is a truly unique PNW experience. What’s a Larch March, you ask? It’s the quest to see the high-altitude Western Larch trees turn a brilliant, glowing gold. Unlike evergreen conifers, these beautiful trees are deciduous and put on a show for just a couple of weeks in late September and early October.

  • The Must-Do: The Heather-Maple Pass Loop is an iconic hike that takes you through a sea of golden larches against a backdrop of dramatic, snow-dusted peaks. It’s a challenging hike, but the views are absolutely breathtaking.
  • The Scenic Drive: If you’re not up for a big hike, the drive along the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) is a destination in itself. Stop at scenic overlooks like the Diablo Lake viewpoint to see the vibrant blue-green water framed by a kaleidoscope of fall colors.

2. Leavenworth: Bavarian Bliss & Autumn Hues

Just a two-hour drive from Seattle, the charming Bavarian-themed village of Leavenworth is magical in the fall. The town’s architecture, combined with the stunning autumn foliage, makes you feel like you’ve been transported to the European Alps.

  • What to Do: Enjoy the annual Autumn Leaf Festival (typically late September), stroll through the town’s park, which is bursting with color, or simply grab a warm pretzel and a stein of beer.
  • Fall Hikes: For a fantastic fall hike near town, explore the Icicle Gorge Nature Loop or head to Lake Wenatchee State Park, where the reflection of the fiery trees on the lake is simply stunning.

3. Mount Rainier National Park

Mount Rainier is a showstopper any time of year, but in the fall, the lower-elevation meadows and hillsides explode with brilliant color.

  • The Best Trails: The Naches Peak Loop Trail is a fan favorite for its easy grade and spectacular views. The huckleberry bushes turn a brilliant red, and the views of Mount Rainier are incredible. The Skyline Trail near Paradise is another great option to see the fall colors contrast with the white glaciers of the mountain.

4. Snoqualmie Pass: Waterfalls & Mountain Vistas

Just a short drive from Seattle, the area around Snoqualmie Pass is a fantastic place for a quick fall escape.

  • Must-See Waterfall: Snoqualmie Falls is a majestic 268-foot waterfall that’s extra dramatic after a fall rain. The surrounding trees turn golden, creating a perfect PNW postcard moment.
  • For Hikers: The Franklin Falls Trail is a popular and relatively easy hike that leads to a beautiful cascading waterfall, often framed by beautiful fall leaves.

5. Whidbey Island: Coastal Colors & Dramatic Cliffs

For a different kind of fall beauty, head north to Whidbey Island. A combination of a scenic drive and a ferry ride, this island offers coastal beauty mixed with beautiful fall colors.

  • The Drive: Head north and cross the stunning Deception Pass Bridge. The views from the bridge itself are amazing, and the park has fantastic walking trails with views of the water and the surrounding forested hills.
  • Island Charm: Drive south to explore charming towns like Coupeville and Langley, and visit Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, where the sweeping views of the bluff and the fall colors in the fields below are breathtaking.

Whether you’re looking for a challenging hike or a relaxing scenic drive, these fall day trips from Seattle are sure to create lasting memories. Enjoy the season!
